Ángel Sepúlveda: The Lone Champion of Neza FC Still Thriving in Liga MX

Ángel Sepúlveda is making a splash in Liga MX with Cruz Azul, previously achieving success with Querétaro and Monarcas Morelia. However, his career began with the historic Neza FC back in 2013, where he helped lead the team to an impressive six-game win streak in the playoffs, clinching the title of the Clausura 2013. Sepúlveda is the sole active player from that championship-winning generation in the top division.
Under the guidance of coach Roberto Hernández, Neza FC had a remarkable playoff run that remains unrivaled to this day. The team entered the playoffs in a modest sixth place out of seven, meaning all their second-leg matches were played away from home. Their greatest strength lay in capitalizing on home advantage, yet they went beyond expectations by securing victories in the second leg of each series.
One of the standout players from that squad was Ángel Sepúlveda, who was honing his skills with the Monarcas Morelia reserve team at the time. During that season, he played 10 matches, although he didn’t find the net himself.
Nevertheless, the ‘Cuate’ scored two crucial goals that contributed to Neza FC’s championship. His first was in a 2-1 victory over Lobos BUAP in the first leg of the quarter-finals. His second pivotal goal came in the first leg of the final against Necaxa, helping Neza secure a 3-0 lead at Neza 86.
Ángel Sepúlveda continues to shine as the sole player from Neza FC’s title-winning generation who remains active. This season, he has netted eight goals and was recently called up to the national team.
Among the noteworthy names from that championship-winning team are Diego Andreí Mejía, who recently took over as coach for Bravos de Juárez, and Rodrigo Prieto, now an assistant at Denmark’s Midtjylland.
Also part of the team was Ever Guzmán, a World Cup champion who notably missed a penalty in the promotion series against La Piedad and is currently without a club.
